My name is John Doe and my story begins with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a United Way Community Partner. I served our country with honor and dignity to protect our freedom. I did not expect to get hurt but it happened. I went to the local DAV chapter in Myrtle Beach for assistance with my VA claim.
While I was there, the volunteer who helped me was very compassionate about my claim. They were asking questions about my current needs, as I explained to them about needing help with rent and utilities I just broke down. I am a husband and father of four children and I am supposed to provide for my family - that is how I was brought up.
The volunteer spoke with the Commander and they told me about their Veterans Assistance Fund. This fund helps veterans, like me, with food, rent and utility assistance based on the need. They worked with my landlord to help with a portion of my rent to get my family through that month till my claim was processed. They also worked closely with the electric company and paid a portion of my bill so my lights would not be turned off. Along with all this support, they continued to help us that month with some food as well.
If it had not been for the DAV and its Veterans Assistance Fund, I cannot imagine what would have happened to my family. My name is John Doe and I live united by protecting my family and country!

Disabled American Veterans, DAV, builds better lives for all veterans and their families through benefits support, outreach and assistance. This national organization was formed as our country struggled to deal with the painful effects of World War I. At this moment our Nation is struggling once again with the impact of war-as American men and women face combat in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other nations. But the story of the Disabled American Veterans is not a story of able-bodied people taking care of handicapped veterans. While it is certainly true that the American people have been invaluable partners in the DAV's mission, the work of our organization has been a self-help proposition since the beginning. The DAV-disabled veterans helping disabled veterans-continues working cohesively to build better lives for all disabled veterans and their families! |
